Io

Io is one of the four Galilean moons of Jupiter. It is the third-largest Galilean moon and the fourth-largest moon in the Solar System.

  • Io is the fifth Moon from Jupiter and the innermost Galilean moon.
  • It is the most geologically active object in the Solar System (over 400 active volcanoes).
  • Volcanoes produce plumes of sulfur and sulfur dioxide that climb as high as 500 km above the surface. The sulfur is what gives Io its yellow colour.
