- The V-2 rocket was the world's first long-range guided ballistic missile. It wasn't designed with any space-related goal, it was just a bomb that went into space on the way to its target. It became the first human-made object to reach space in June 1944.
- After WWII, the USA used the same design to kick-start their new space program.
