Where did the dust and gas that the Solar System formed from originate?

The solar system formed from icy and rocky material comimg from the explosions of one or more large stars (supernovae). Most of the cloud was made of hydrogen and helium (about 98%) with the rest being heavier elements. The initial composition of the solar nebula was similar to that of the sun today.
