What is a sunspot?

A sunspot is a dark area on the "surface" of the sun. It is caused by a disturbance in the sun's magnetic field, resulting in a spot which is cooler than the surrounding area. The magnetic field goes through a cycle of approximately 11 years, from minimum to maximum activity, and thus from less to more sunspots.
